About the trainer
Luke Brown grew up on a sheep and cattle ranch in southwestern Colorado near the great Rocky Mountains. Riding and training horses has been a passion of his since before he could even walk. At the age of 10, he began a journey of training horses, which led to an accident that changed how he felt about his safety around and on horses. He has made it a life mission to help prepare horses and riders to experience positive and safe relationships. Safety is his priority. Preparation is the key.

More About Luke and Reata Horsemanship

  • Sports
Luke has been involved in sports since his early elementary days.  He wrestled until the 5th grade when he broke his arm.  While healing, he picked up a basketball and found he had a natural gift, even playing with just one arm.  He fell in love with the sport, grew tall, and excelled, eventually being offered a college scholarship to play, which he turned down to serve an LDS mission in Paraguay.   His passion for basketball in junior high and high school led to  becoming a Colorado All-State basketball player his senior year in 1997.  Luke also excelled in track, breaking the school record in the high jump and 300 meter hurdles, and making the Colorado State Track Meet in multiple events.

Like his passion for playing basketball, Luke feels a passion for ranching, farming, and horsemanship.
  • Education
Education has always been a focus for Luke. He was taught from an early age to study hard and get good grades. He became Valedictorian of his Senior High School Class of '97 and then attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah where he earned a degree as a Doctor of Physical Therapy.  Physiology and health have always been a focus of Luke's life.

He brings his knowledge and experience to horsemanship. Those who truly want to be good horse people must also focus on their own health and well being.  Education is key to Luke's training and coaching programs as he believes that application of the right knowledge will lead to better human beings, better horses, and better and safer horse/human relationships.
  • Ranch Life
Luke grew up in rural southwestern Colorado where he learned the value of hard work and producing natural food and fiber through sheep and beef cattle. Throughout Luke's life, horses have been an integral part of his daily life. Raising sheep and cattle gave countless opportunities to ride horses. These horses had to be well-trained. On the ranch, a well-trained horse was the difference in getting the job done safely or not at all. It was an absolute necessity.
Now, Reata Ranch continues to be a working sheep and cattle ranch in southwestern Colorado. As well, Reata Ranch now offers Colorado Rocky Mountain Sheep Herding, Camping, and Horseback Riding Adventures for those seeking to disconnect from work and other stresses and reconnect with themselves, their family, friends, and other loved ones on this once-in-a-lifetime 3-day, 2-night adventure.
  • Horse Training
At the age of 10, Luke took on the challenge of attempting to train his horse, Invierno. Invierno, which means "winter' in Spanish, was born on the ranch when Luke was just 7 years old. Although Luke had ridden many horses before, this was his first attempt at training his own horse. An accident with Invierno changed Luke's feelings about his safety when around or on horses. He learned first hand how dangerous horses can be if they are not prepared well.

He has made it his mission to educate people about horses and horse behavior and to train horses to be safer partners with their owners. His mission is to significantly reduce the number of accidents with horses and owners, and through education, connection, and training, he plans to do just that.

Luke is married to Stacy and together they have 5 children from age 21 down to 3.  Having children from pre-school to graduated from college keeps Luke and Stacy on their toes and constantly growing as parents and individuals.  Teaching strong moral values has always been a part of Luke and Stacy's life, and they instill that in their children.

Luke and Stacy believe parenting is the most important job for anyone with children.  Our children are our future, and through principles of horsemanship, Luke and Stacy are determined not only to become better parents, striving daily for this, but they want to share their knowledge and experience with others. Career

After college, Luke practiced as a Physical Therapist for 8 years. During that time, he also bought his grandmother's sheep operation and did that for 3 years along with Physical Therapy and buying/selling real estate. Ultimately, he returned to his roots to help run the family ranch in Colorado. One focus was training all the ranch horses.  Since the age of 10, Luke has been riding and training horses and mules along with all his other accomplishments.

Now, Luke works solely to train horses of all levels and focuses on problem horses, colt starting and owner education and training to help improve horse-human relationships through preparation and safety. One of his mottos is "Safety is Our Priority. Preparation is the Key."  His goal is to dramatically reduce horse accidents through education and training and to create a tight community of horse owners and enthusiasts whose focus is personal and horsemanship development.

One way he believes he can be of more assistance to the millions of horse owners and enthusiasts in the world is to create a Community Membership site where members of all ages and walks of life can join and be part of the latest proven methods of horse training and management and feel connected through communication with other like-minded members and professionals who are also seeking to improve their life and their horsemanship.

"...I'm now riding the horse of my dreams because of the work of Luke at Reata Horsemanship."

I have had the opportunity to watch and film [Luke] as he has worked with these horses... I was more than a little concerned because of their history. I know the individuals personally that said that these horses were very dangerous and the person that was landed in the hospital because of one of them. I have watched Luke in awe as he has worked with these and other horses. He has turned them from horses of high concern to horses that I want to be around and ride in just three to four sessions working with them. They are now very sweet horses that I would feel extremely comfortable climbing on and riding. In fact, I am now riding the horse of my dreams because of the work done by Luke at Reata Horsemanship. It is truly amazing what he has done!
-Debbie B., Ignacio, CO

“I can’t say enough good about Luke Brown. He’s calm, careful, thorough, but gets things done with a horse super-quick and efficiently.”
“Luke Brown of Reata Horsemanship just finished a tune-up series with each of two of my horses, and I couldn’t be more pleased with their progress...Luke did ground work with, and then rode, each of them, making sure they were reliable while being flagged and dragging tarps. Then he rode each of them on the urban trail, with cars going by, dogs barking, irrigation gates rushing - past all the distractions and surprises you’ll find in semi-urban Mesa. Luke gets the job done quickly, thoroughly and without fuss, leaving you with a safer, calmer, smarter horse. I only wish I’d found him years earlier.”
